Canada’s first ‘dementia village’ set to open its doors

Inspired by a Dutch housing project known as Hogewyk, which is the world’s first “dementia village”, Canada’s first dementia village project is opening in Langley this July.

These dementia villages create a safe, secure environment for wandering seniors that reduce their chance of becoming confused and overwhelmed. Seniors can move around freely, visit stores, neighbors, and enjoy the scenery on the 7 acres lot.

The price tag is on the high side at approximately $7,000/month but Project Leader, Elroy Jespersen, says that is not more than what standard nursing homes cost, after government subsidy, which will not be applicable for this type of home (at this time).

The home is set to open in July and is already close to full occupancy with pre-registrations.
